Ugandan School System

Uganda has universal primary (elementary) education, which is intended to make primary school free for all students. However, due to limited government funding, parents must still pay large amounts to send their children to school. Parents are expected to cover school fees and purchase their childrens' own scholastic materials, expenses that many families struggle to afford. As the cost of education can be a significant burden for students attending the Ugandan schools that Sister Schools serves, donated school supplies help ensure that children can attend school prepared with the materials they need to learn.

Location

Ray of Hope is located in Namuwongo, a suburb in Kampala city that is situated alongside a defective railroad in the city's industrial area. With over 2,500 structures, Namuwongo is the 2nd largest slum in Kampala with close to 30,000 residents. Built in a swamp, Namuwongo homes are subject to frequent flooding and exposure to waterborne illnesses. Namuwongo is home to many refugees coming from Northern Uganda, DR Congo, and South Sudan. It is estimated that the typical Namuwongo family survives off of $1 per day.

Campus

The campus is located in an urban slum and is composed of a nursery section (composed of pre-school and kindergarten) and a primary section. The primary section only accommodates pupils from grades 1 to 4 due to a lack of financial ability to hire teachers for the upper classes.

The classrooms at Ray of Hope Learning Centre are small, and the center lacks enough chairs or desks for the students. Despite this, the headteacher and teachers are passionate about their work and class lessons are well-conducted.

Culture & Language

Students at Ray of Hope come from a variety of cultures and countries, but many of them are part of the Buganda people group, the largest ethnic group in Uganda, which makes up approximately 17% of the country's total population. Luganda is the primary language spoken by the Baganda people, and children grow up speaking Luganda at home. Students begin learning English in kindergarten, and by fourth grade, English becomes the sole language of instruction at school.
