Fernwood Elementary recently brought its community together for an inspiring evening of music, generosity, and global connection. Through their incredible benefit concert, students, staff, and families raised nearly $5,000 to support Sister Schools programs and students in Uganda—a powerful result of months of dedication and collaboration.
The concert showcased four outstanding student groups: the Bad Monkeys Marimba Band, the Keiki Nani Ukulele Club, the Benefit Concert Choir, and the Fernwood Strings Club. Each performance reflected not only musical talent, but also the focus, teamwork, and joy that filled the room. It was a memorable night that highlighted what young people can accomplish when they come together for a shared purpose.

In addition to the considerable musical talent on display from our students, we were also graced with student emcees! Laila and Saisreya helped guide the evening with thoughtful preparation and confidence. It was inspiring to see young students step onto the stage and use their voices to lead, connect with the audience, and support a meaningful cause.

During the event, we also honored the recipient of the Overton Berry Service Award, which celebrates the legacy of jazz musician Overton Berry and his lifelong commitment to serving the Pacific Northwest community. This year’s award went to Julian Cortes, a thoughtful student who created a video to raise awareness and understanding of autism. Inspired by his autistic brother, Julian’s work reflects empathy, inclusion, and a strong commitment to supporting others. We were proud to share his video at the concert and recognize his meaningful contribution to building a more inclusive community.
This event would not have been possible without the vision and tireless effort of Katherine Berry, whose leadership brought the concert to life. Her commitment, along with the support of teachers, parents, and students, created an evening that resonated far beyond the stage.
Every dollar raised represents more than a donation... it represents connection. The Fernwood community has helped strengthen the bond between classrooms across the world, making a meaningful difference in the lives of students in Uganda.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to making this event such a success.
