At first glance, Mesarch is a typical 15‑year‑old boy in rural Uganda. But his experience with Sister Schools has quietly changed the way he imagines his future. Mesarch’s story shows how Sister Schools helps Ugandan students hold onto their dreams and see a path forward, even when daily life is full of obstacles.
Mesarch’s life at home
Mesarch lives in Masiko village with his mother and five siblings. His mother is a cabbage farmer. Mesarch explains that despite all her hard work, she still struggles to earn enough to cover school fees and school supplies for six children. The family lives in a small, unpainted brick house with two rooms, a simple home that makes every book and pencil feel precious.
A backpack that protects his education
When Sister Schools visited Mesarch’s school, one of the items he received was a backpack. Mesarch explains, “I received a backpack and it helped me to keep my books safely,” a small but meaningful change that protects the tools he needs to learn. On distribution day “it was a day full of excitement and we were so happy!” These simple gifts turned an ordinary school day into a celebration of possibility.
Holding onto a future dream
Education is central to how Mesarch imagines his future. “When I finish my studies I want to become a driver,” he writes, adding that he wants “to go to senior six and then join a driving school,” a clear plan that depends on staying in school and having the supplies to succeed. Pride in his school and country
Mesarch wants students in Seattle to know that he is proud of where he learns and where he lives. “I love my school. It has very good teachers. And Uganda is a good country Uganda,” he writes, eager for partners abroad to see the strength and beauty in his community. Through Sister Schools, his voice and his story travel far beyond Masiko village, inviting others to stand alongside him as he pursues his goals.
