We’re thrilled to share some inspiring news—Martha, one of our Sister Schools scholarship students, has graduated!

Last week, she was among the 9,200 students who received their degrees from Makerere University, proudly earning her Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery. This remarkable achievement reflects not only Martha’s dedication and perseverance but also the power of educational opportunity to transform lives.

You may recognize Martha from our recent auction video, where she shared some of her story. Watch it again here to get a brief glimpse of her story:

Martha has overcome incredible odds to get where she was today. Raised by a single mom, her family struggled to make ends meet. She remembers when she was about 10 years old, she got tore a big hole in the back of her school uniform. Her family didn’t have the funds to replace it, so Martha spent the rest of the school year with her sweater tied around her waist in order to cover the hole and stay in class.

Her tenacity paid off as she performed well on exams and was accepted into a great secondary school, and later college. Sister Schools is honored to have helped her academic journey in many ways over the years. We provided school supplies for her primary school that allowed her to stay in class when she otherwise would have been sent home for lack of materials. We also provided scholarships to help cover her ongoing education.

Congratulations, Martha! It’s a joy to see your hard work pay off!
